My elation at being able to hear myself think due to getting the exhaust leak in the Sentra fixed has been dashed by the fact that I can now hear the very prominent rod knock coming from the engine. Lovely. I lack most of the tools and have no garage or driveway in which to do an engine rebuild. Guess the Nissan is getting parked for a while.

My dad parks his cars in the driveway and garage so I can’t use any of those, and in order to fix this I’d have to remove the engine, tear down the engine, figure out what exactly broke (probably a spun cap bearing, could be a main bearing as well), order the new parts, wait for the new parts, install the new parts, put it all back together, and I’m sure there’s probably something wrong with the trans due to the squeal when the clutch is out in neutral.

boo :(

Hey, you did good. You fixed one thing. This sort of reminds me of my Cavalier. Fixed the dash, windshield and sway bar for inspections. Then they (out of province inspections) give me a list of 12 other things to fix, somewhere I may still have the list. If I recall the list involved, a new muffler, an exhaust hanger, fixing the power steering rack leakage (yeah, right, more like “cleaning the rack”), Power steering hoses, Transmission mounts, and putting on washers under the strut mounting bolts. Well I put on the washers since those costed $3.00 at Home Depot, and was one more thing to check off the list for the next owner.

Sold it for $900, and they can start tackling the list with renewed gusto since they didn’t pay for the windshield, dashboard and sway bar links lol.

I recommend selling it to the next owner. Hey you might get $500.

is it rod knock, or is it piston slap??

is it rod knock, or is it wrist pin slack??

possibly loose exhaust bolts on the manifold??

exhaust leak off the headers??

or were you just TRYING to break the $1 sentra ???

Knock knock

Who’s there?

Rod.

Rod who?

Rod knock.

Sounds like a good way for an engine viewing window to appear suddenly.

that SOUNDS like spark knock,............ its not near heavy enough for rod knock, and rod knock is downright consistent. doesnt go away at low rpm. and gets real ....intense under load.

what kind of gas you running? check the timing.

87 octane, I believe, I tried retarding the timing as far as it would go to no effect, because that was my first thought. Spark knock wouldn’t explain the black oil that was brown 1000 miles ago, though.

Also, in that video the poster tore down the engine and found a spun rod bearing.

some of those cars have a “set timing”wire that you disconnect to set, and then reconnect when done....... might try running better (higher octane) gas

brown to black?...... could be blow by.

do you do your own oil changes??? drop the oil, and filter and see what it looks like, specifically look for metal flakes...... next, what grade of oil/type is in it? don’t try and run the super thin ultra light weight full synthetic in an old tired worn out motor. sometimes that super thin oil doesnt agree with older motors.....

.......just things to look at, and consider.

I think there might be a jumper for that, yes.

I considered blow by as a possibility, but wouldn’t that cause a power drop due to lower compression?

Yes, I do my own oil changes. I’m probably going to put a 5w30 in there and see what happens, might just drop the oil pan and look for any metal buildup and check the bearings all at once.

Interesting about thin oil, though. In Miatas people run anything from 0w20 to 10w40 in order to solve the lifter tick the 1.6 engines are prone to.

blow by does lower power, but usually not by a whole lot..... but the combustion that slips by the rings will color the oil quick.

detonation, from cheap(low grade(octane rating))gas and off timing can kill a motor quick(beat the bearings out of it)........ spend some money for good gas for a while(tank or two), see if it helps. and dont run that e85 stuff, or the other new one...... just the premium to see if it will get it to quit knocking.....

IF.....you do just so happen to drop the pan........ take the time to check the piston skirts, to make sure that they havent cracked and broken one..... that would cause it to make noise and have blow by. stick your hand up the cylinder and see if you can wiggle the piston on the wristpin( up and down in the cylinder......

about those miatas....... those are usually either fresh builds, rebuilds or basically new factory engines. they tolerate low weight oil fine. tired older worn engines not so much. you might try some straight 30 oil maybe a zinc additive , well, depending on temp for where you are at....... band-aid and chewing gum fix...

you might run a compression check....... see if you have one that is way off from the others. they should usually all be within 20% if you do, thats where to look.
